Insurance fraud investigators served 22 search warrants in four Southern California counties and arrested an Orange County orthopedic surgeon on fraud charges Thursday, the San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office announced.
Investigators charged Dr. Jay Allan Vogel, 62, with 40 counts of felony insurance fraud on a warrant issued by Alameda County. He was booked at the Newport Beach Police Station and later transferred to the Orange County Central Men's Facility, according to the jail's website. Bail was set at $680,000.
California Medical Board records show Vogel graduated from the Autonomous University of Guadalajara Faculty of Medicine in 1975 and received a license to practice medicine in California in 1978. He practices in Irvine. There is no record of disciplinary action against him on the Medical Board's website.
Vogel is scheduled for a June 10 arraignment in Alameda County.
Investigators from the California Department of Insurance Fraud Division, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, the Riverside District Attorney’s Office, the Orange District Attorney’s Office, California State Employment Development Department fraud investigators, and the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department assisted in serving the warrants.
The search warrants were the result of a cooperative effort of the California Department of Insurance Fraud Division, the Employment Development Department, and the district attorney offices in San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange and Los Angeles counties, the San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office said in the press release. More than 140 law-enforcement officials participated in serving the warrants.
The San Bernardino District Attorney’s office said no further information would be released because the investigation is continuing.
